Glorious

There is a love that will never leave us
There is a love that won’t forsake
Our Saviour’s love that will never let us go
You are the way to eternal freedom
You are the truth that we will stand on
Unending love that will never let us go

We will dance, we will sing
Lift our praises to the King
He is glorious!
He is glorious!

God’s sacrifice for our salvation
The highest price for His creation
Our Saviour’s love that will never let us go
In Jesus Christ we find our freedom
In Jesus Chris we find our reason
Unending love that will never let us go

Jesus, You’re the way, the truth, the life
We find ourselves in You
We find ourselves in You, Lord

We will dance, we will sing
Lift our praises to the King
You are glorious!
You are glorious!

This Is Love

You came to this world
Our Heavenly King
Who took human form
And carried our sin
With love so amazing, You lifted the chains from the lost
Your blood for our shame, You surrendered Your life on the cross

Denied and betrayed, beaten and mocked
Tortured and crucified, forsaken by God
With love so amazing, You lifted the chains from the lost
Your blood for our shame, You surrendered Your life on the cross

This is Love
This is Love

You rose from the grave, Victorious King
Your beautiful sacrifice has conquered our sin
With love so amazing, You lifted the chains from the lost
Your blood for our shame, You surrendered Your life on the cross

Jesus Christ, You gave Your life for us,
For us, This is love
Jesus Christ, You gave Your life for us,
For us, This is love

A number of people have requested the names of the songs that we sing over the weekend. Our heart is to resource our congregation to worship God in any way we can, so we thought the best thing to do would be to post a list of the songs we sing over each weekend along with tracks or YouTube links so that you can listen to the songs and learn them during the week. Hopefully this will benefit you! In the following weeks we’ll also include the songs sun in our Kids work and also at LIFE so you will always be able to find the songs we’re singing. For now, here are the songs from Sunday 26th February 2012:

The Lord is My Rock – Elevation Worship   YouTube

Be Glorified – ALM (Chorus only)   YouTube

Hallelujah – Kerith Worship    (Download Hallelujah)

Came to My Rescue – Hillsong United    YouTube

Drawing Near – Kerith Worship (At 19:00 meeting only)    (Download Drawing Near)

One of the things we occasionally do as a team is lead worship at our church plant in Melle, France. Led by Howard and Elizabeth Reece-Smith, one of the most inspirational couples I have ever met, the church meets once a month (in English), often with a speaker and worship leader from Bracknell. You can find out more about the church plant here.

On Saturday, Liam Parker and I will accompany Ben Davies to Melle for Sunday’s meeting. While we’re there, I’ll have the privilege of leading worship and Liam, our Youth Pastor, will meet with various people to talk about youth work in the area. Ben, of course, will be preaching and sharing his considerable experience in church leadership – having led Kerith Community Church for 43 years before handing its leadership over to Simon, he’s got plenty to talk about! I’m excited about the foundations that are being built in Melle and as always, look forward to seeing what God will do there. Next week, I’ll post some pictures so you can see what is happening there for yourself!

At the time of writing the song, I remember thinking about how lots of the popular songs we were singing as a church worldwide were becoming more focussed on ourselves. The content of them seemed to centre on us as individuals, our own personal guilt and shame in comparison to Jesus’ wonderful grace which he extends to us. Now there’s absolutely nothing wrong with this; some of my favourite songs are based upon this theme and we need to remind ourselves every day of the price Jesus paid for us as sinners. However, when the church chooses to focus more on this aspect of our salvation than other aspects, the effect can be crippling. The church can adopt a ‘victim’ attitude which renders us helpless and inactive due to our overwhelming sense of inadequacy and guilt. I wanted to shift the focus and remind us as a church that we are called to something bigger than ourselves: to see people far from God be brought into his loving family. Hence the structure of the song:

(Verse) ‘We’ve seen you move, we’ve seen your power…’ – the verse speaks of all God has done: His power, His love and His faithfulness in our lives.  One thing that is important about this song is that it isn’t dependent upon what God will do in this moment or in the future but upon what He has already done. The truth is that Jesus is ever faithful and will continue to move in our lives but even if He didn’t, the amount He has already done is staggering and wonderful and worthy of our worship.

(Chorus) ‘We’ll be bold and tell all the world…’ – On the back of all Jesus has done we must ask ourselves what is our response to this? How can we not accept the mission He gives us through the Great Commission? Why wouldn’t we share all of this with others?

(Bridge) ‘We will not be afraid, we will not be discouraged…’ For many it is fear which prevents us from sharing our faith with others;  however, through the bridge of the song, which is taken from the Book of Joshua when God states ‘Be strong and very courageous’, we are reminded that ‘If God is for us, who can be against us?’ We can be confident in our evangelism because we are confident in our Creator.

Throughout the song there is a lot of repetition of ‘We’ which is purposeful. I don’t deny that moments of worship can be intimate and personal but at the same time our God is relational and the reason we gather together is so we can worship as a community, ‘This is our God, Jesus our King’ as united believers. I am passionate about the church worshipping together and so instead of choosing to sing ‘I’ve seen you move…’, there is more power in proclaiming ‘We’ve seen you move…’. When we declare ‘To see the lost reclaimed// To see this nation saved’ it can be fairly overwhelming for just one person. However when you remind yourself that you have a God who is fighting for you and that you are part of the family of the church then anything seems possible. I hope this song fills us with joy and hope as we worship together in community and that as a church we will lift our gaze to God’s vision as we sing.

Behind the song, God, Jesus, Jesus Christ, John, Kerith Worship, Son of God, This Is Love

We hear the words ‘I love…’ so often that they can sometimes lose a little bit of their power. From the latest film to the oldest stories, those two words can prefix so many feelings and yet, due to chronic overuse of the phrase, say so little. There are over 6 billion results on Google for the word ‘love’. We all think we know what love is. Don’t we?

I thought I did myself – with all the worldly wisdom I’ve acquired in twenty-two years on this earth (which, to clarify, isn’t much at all – no really, I’m only just a little above gormless), I often fall into the trap of thinking that I not only know love, but understand it. Then I read this:

This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. (1 John 4:10)

Wow. At this point I need to confess to something. I often tell people that ‘I love tuna’. It’s my favourite food. Ever.

How can I the same word I use to describe my penchant for canned fish also be used to describe the brutal crucifixion of the Son of God? To describe the act in which he endured, suffered and conquered the cross, along with our our sin and shame in order that we might know an eternal relationship with our Heavenly Father. This is a love that I will never fully understand, but humbly and gratefully accept. This is love.

From a songwriting perspective, the writing process began quite unusually – with the pre-chorus:

“With love so amazing you lifted the chains from the lost.
Your blood for our shame, you surrendered your life on the cross”

The rest of the song is centred around two very distinct moods; the devastation of the death of the man who was believed by a few to be the Son of God and the elation of his triumphant resurrection. The chorus is simple, but serves as a reminder to me that the word ‘love’ means much more than the person or object I tie it to. It is much better suited to the incomprehensible sacrifice of Jesus and his unfathomable grace. Hopefully, that idea has a similar impact on you. In the same chapter as the previous verse, John says something else so succinct and yet so powerful:

We love because he first loved us. (1 John 4:19)

God, I pray that I would never forget the cross; that in one beautiful display of unthinkable love for us, you gave us hope. I pray that I will constantly be minded that this is true love. Father, I pray that I would be filled with a love that’s worthy of you. Amen.

This is Love
